“In re Gault” is featured here on this little Huntington Beach star! It is

considered one of our foremost important designs, as “protection of the child” is

not only the first and single most important concern of the Court, but of our

families and larger society. In re Gault (1967) extended the right to counsel to

children charged with delinquency even if parents were unable to afford counsel. The

decision grew out of the Court’s recognition that the juvenile delinquency system

had failed to meet the special and individual needs of children caught up in a

nonrehabilitative system of criminal law.

In the Best Interests of the Child, we strive to protect and nurture, cultivate

their strength and passions, prepare them for the promises and opportunities of

society, and support their struggle to attain a separate identity with physical,
